In 1964, US figure skating was still rebuilding after the 1961 plane crash that killed the entire US team as it was on its way to the World Championships in Prague. Worlds were immediately cancelled at word of the accident, the skating world grieved and the US figure skating community was devastated. Peggy Fleming was the first of a new generation of US figure skating stars to emerge after the tragedy. She won the first of 5 consecutive US titles in 1964. The other winners were:
