There where 3 main criteria for participation in the games:
Although women were not allowed in the Olympic Games, they still practised sport. At Olympia (back then it was called Olympia not Olympics, young girls had there own games, the Heraia, in honour of the goddess Hera, the wife of Zeus. These competitions were held every four years and consisted of running races only.
Married woman were not allowed however unmarried woman were allowed to watch. Woman were not allowed to compete, yet they could enter their own chariot for the races. If they won, the owners were considered the winners due to the cost of mantaining the chariot and horses. The woman had their own Games, called the Hera Games.
Women were allowed in the ancient Olympic games only when the owned a horse who participated in the race . Otherwise they were not allowed.
