There are approximately 4700 medals given out overall in the 3 catagories (Gold, Silver & Bronze), which means that approximately 14,100 medals are awarded during the Olympiad.
Olympic athletes are not paid to participate, or receive monetary rewards for medals awarded.
Final count: Gold 302, Silver: 304, and Bronze: 356 for total of 962 Note this is count by country not for individual athletes so the total number of medals is much larger because many events (e.g. Football/soccer, archery, etc.) are team events and the entire team got medals. See related links below.
Selling them in the US is worth 6 months in jail. 18 U.S. Code § 704 makes it illegal to sell US military medals except to those that have been awarded them.

Mary Seacole was not a nurse. She did not have a boarding house for wounded soldiers. She was an entrepreneur and she went to the Crimea to provide what amounted to a cafe, mainly for officers, because they were the people who could afford it. She also provided some natural medications to all soldiers with cholera, dysentery and other ailments. However, she was too kindhearted and provided a lot of stuff free to those who couldn't afford it, including too much credit to too many officers for their 'bar bills'. Went she went to England after the war, penniless, she appealed for help, and many of those officers who had benefited from her generosity rallied round and contributed to a fund for her. Some out of embarrassment for unpaid bills, no doubt. She was clearly a very nice and kind person. But she was not a saint, nor even a great icon - certainly not in the way, unfortunately, she has recently been portrayed for dubious political and educational reasons.
