In light of the extremely elaborate opening and closing festivities, I would say that the Olympics still qualifies as a festival. It is certainly not limited strictly to athletic competition.

The Greek Olympics were similar to our modern Olympics in the sense that people belonging to every nationality would have the chance to come togethor for a short period of time and take part in a little friendly competition. It was meant to show to all Greeks that through their mutual appreciation of athleticism, they were culturally unified. In a way it was a diplomatic gesture the same way it is today, because it showed that very distinct groups of people could find one thing in common which they could all hold respect for.

Well, the summer olympics is every 4 years, and the winter olympics are every 2nd year inbetween the summer olympics.
They both have sporting events even though they have different ones, also they give out medals to the winners. Female athletes did not compete during the 1896 games. The olympic motto was still faster, higher, stronger although in latin which it was originally said in was citius, altius, forties.
