The word "engineer" is often used in Germany, Italy and other European countries to denote what Americans would call a technician or a mechanic, not a degreed MIT graduate. In that sense, Schumacher is indeed an"engineer": he worked for several years as a tech for a Mercedes-Benz dealer.
He is not, however, a graduate mechanical, electrical, civil or any other kind of true engineer in the American sense.
