Cuts the glare of the sun or bright lights. I believe that this was first started my American motorcycle racers such as Gene Romero in the 1970s. When wearing a dark visor in bright sunlight, you can see your cheeks reflected off the inner surface. American footballers probably adopted it as warpaint.
