At first he got cancer in his leg so they amputated his leg so he had to use a fake leg. Then he started the marathon of hope to raise money for cancer research his goal was for every canadian to donate one dollar for cancer research so he ran across Canada to achieve his goal when he had reached thunder bay he had problems breathing then the doctors found out that the cancer had spread from his leg to his lungs. so Teery foxes marathon of hope ended in thunder bay. but he raised millions of dollars for cancer research
The best answer I read was from a friend of his, "anger" is what motivated Terry Fox. After his cancer was found, he spent a lot of time in a pediatric cancer ward & became friends with other patients. The majority of them died and he became determined to do something about this. The irony is that to-day, the type of bone cancer that cost him his leg and then his life, has a high cure rate.
The reason Terry Fox ran across Canada was to raise money and awareness for cancer research. His goal was to raise one dollar from all of Canada's 24 million people.
Fox got the idea of the Marathon of hope, when he read a article about Dick Traum, the first amputee to complete The New York City Marathon. Fox was very upset with how little money was dedicated for cancer research. This quote reveals his frustration and his reasoning for creating the Marathon of hope: "I soon realized that that would only be half my quest, for as I went through the 16 months of the physically and emotionally draining ordeal of chemotherapy, I was rudely awakened by the feelings that surrounded and coursed through the cancer clinic. There were faces with the brave smiles, and the ones who had given up smiling. There were feelings of hopeful denial, and the feelings of despair. My quest would not be a selfish one. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even though I would be set free from mine. Somewhere the hurting must stop....and I was determined to take myself to the limit for this cause."
He was twenty years old when he started his run.
terry fox is importent because he raised over 24 million dollars for helping cancer Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer and had his right leg amputated. He wanted to raise money for all cancer patients and did this by running 42 kilometres (26miles) a day across Canada. After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) he had to stop because the cancer spread into his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981. He was 22. We still honor him today through the "Terry Fox Run" which is held across Canada and around the world every year. Close to $500 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name.
I seem to remember that Mayor Jean Drapeau was NOT supportive of Terry Fox's epic run and refused to give permission for the fund-raising aspect as the young man ran through Montreal. Is this accurate?

No. His 5,000-mile run across Canada was cut short when doctors found his cancer spread to his lungs. He died 10 months later. From his courageous trek, Terry Fox raised $1 dollar for every person alive in Canada in 1980.
