Cricket is popular in the West Indies and India because of the fact that they were provinces in the British Empire and, as Britain in invented cricket, the British colonials naturally played it and so it spread into the culture of the respectives countries for all citizens. Look at the other cricketing nations, for example: Australia, South Africa and New Zealand were all British colonies. South America was mainly colonised by Spain and Portugal therefore Cricket would not have been played by the colonials. This meant that it never developed a following amongst the natives hence why it is not played in South America with the exception of Guyana which was a British colony and so does play cricket.
