The first African-American women to actually compete in the Olympics was Tidye Pickett in 80 meter hurdles at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin. She was knocked out in the semi-finals.
Four years earlier, at the 1932 Summer Games in Los Angeles, Pickett and Louise Stokes were members of the 4x100 meter relay team but did not compete.
That was Shirley Strickland de la Hunty of Australia who won the 80 meter hurdles event at the 1952 Games in Oslo and the 1956 Games in Melbourne.
As of the 2008 Games, Guinea-Bissau has competed in three Summer Games (1996, 2000, 2004) and has not won an Olympic medal.
