In 1986, Greg LeMond from Reno Nevada, became the first American to win the Tour de France. He also won in 1989 and 1990 after having to take a break from cycling in 1987 to recover from wounds he received when he was accidentally shot by his brother-in-law while they were out hunting.
Lance Armstrong, the Texan rider who is currently with UCI ProTeam Astana alongside 2009 Tour winner Alberto Contador, won the Tour seven times in a row between 1999 and 2005 - not only is this a record for consecutive wins but is also the most Tour wins by any one rider (the next highest, shared by Miguel Indurain, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Jacques Anquetil, is five wins).
Armstrong is currently organising a new team, named Team RadioShack after its chief sponsor, to compete in the 2010 Tour.
