There was no Olympic Games in 1997. However, in the 1996 Games, Danyon Loader won gold in the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle. Blyth Tait won the other gold medal for New Zealand in the 1996 Games in equestrian competition.

That was Valerie Vili who won gold in women's shot put at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Prior to Vili, New Zealand's last gold in athletics was at the 1976 Games in Montreal when John Walker won the men's 1500 meter run.

That was kayaker Ian Ferguson who won gold in the 500 meter singles, 500 meter pairs with Paul MacDonald, and 1000 meter fours with Paul MacDonald, Alan Thompson, and Grant Bramwell.
