Ed Harvey was the first. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1894, about 60 years before an African-American football player was allowed on the field at the University of Missouri. Ed's brothers also attended KU and played varsity sports. One of them became a doctor, another a lawyer with a law degree from KU.
The first black football player in Iowa State University. He was injured in a game by white players. He then died because of that injury. People believe that the white players purposefully injured him because of his race. There is now a stadium named after him in Ames Iowa named th eJack Trice Stadium.
