On June 6, 2009, Reggie Wyatt of La Sierra High School in Riverside, CA ran 35.02, in a preliminary race of the California State Meet to take the National (NFHS) record for 300 hurdles. The previous record-holder was Jeshua Anderson from Taft High School in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles), CA who ran 35.28, in the finals of the CIF California State Meet in 2007. His record narrowly beat the record of 35.32 set by George Porter of Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, CA (in a preliminary meet qualifying him for that same California State Meet in 1985) that stood for over 22 years.
In theory, elite open 400 hurdlers can pass the 300 mark at a faster pace en route, but there have not been any official situations to time them at that point (usually near the end of a curve. Given the opportunity, that same quality of athlete could easily break the high school record quality time finishing 100 meters early, but athletes of that level do not get asked to run the shorter distance.
