The numbers reference the formations and who the receivers could be in order. For example: primary, secondary, etc. Each coach may combine a system of names and numbers to represent the play called. The numbers may also represent the type of play and location in the direction a running back may run. For example, 32 Counter Trap would be the fullback stepping right and ending up running left off the guard. Coaches create their own system. In today's game the system used is very complex and only understandable to the team calling the play. In order to brack the system by other teams - coaches may activate a player whom was released a week earlier from the team they may be playing in the weeks to come in order to get a brain dump from the player.
