The fact that the ball was discolored and may have blended in with the spectator stands. From that point on, major league umpires insisted on having dirt spoiled balls cleaned or replaced by new ones. The year was 1920. In that year,ironically, Chapman's Cleveland Indians beat the Brooklyn Robins in the World Series.
