Moving mechanical parts usually need some degree of lubrication so that they do not waste energy in overcoming friction. A very simple case of this would be a door hinge. If the door hinge has too much friction, the door squeaks when you open or close it. It moves smoothly and quietly if it is lubricated. With something like the motor of a car or an airplane, friction would present much more serious problems than the squeak of a door hinge. You would get terrible overheating and eventually an explosion, in an unlubricated motor.
