The finish of the first Daytona 500 was one of the most controversial in NASCAR's history.
Lee Petty battled with Johnny Beauchamp during the final 30 laps of the race, it being notable that these two drivers were the only ones on the lead lap. Petty took the lead with 3 laps left, and led at the start of the final lap. Petty and Beauchamp drove side by side across the finish line at the end final lap for a photo finish.
Beauchamp was declared the unofficial winner by NASCAR officials. Petty protested the results and fellow competitor Fireball Roberts, who was standing by the finish line, stated it was clear that Petty had won. After viewing additional photographs and newsreel footage, NASCAR officials declared Petty the winner three days later.
The first Daytona 500 did not take place until 1959, so there was no Daytona 500 in 1950.
In 1959, Lee Petty won the first Daytona 500. He drove a 1959 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88.
