When they mixed the paint it accidentally came out pink. Since they did not have enough money to repaint the car, it was left that way. Dale drove the pink race car around the local dirt tracks of North Carolina.

He began racing for Richard Childress in '84 in what amounted to a driver swap with Ricky Rudd. The 1956 Ford Victoria was Dale Sr's first dirt track car. In 1978 Dale drove a #96 Ford in four races for Will Cronkrite.
