You CAN, but most people don't. Tony Stewart is an owner-driver; he owns the cars he races. Dale Earnhardt was an owner-driver too, but he owned cars that other people drove, and drove cars other people owned. Darrell Waltrip and Bill Elliott were also owner-drivers, as was Richard Petty.

If by "his own car" you mean the one in his driveway...no, street cars are very different from racing cars.

In Nascar 05 Chase for the Cup where can you hire a driver?

After you purchase a team, you can go into your race shop, select the series in which you own a team, and select the option that says "HIRE DRIVER".Tip: If you own a National Series car, hire Ty Sheets as your driver. He has the potential to win races, so he'll earn you a lot of money. However, he doesn't seem to do as well if he is hired in any of the other series.

What kind of motor do they run in NASCAR?

Most NASCAR race teams build their own engines. Some smaller teams lease engines from a team that builds engines. Building your own engines can allow a team to customize their car to their drivers style and abilities. But teams do not have free reign when it comes to building their engines. NASCAR has strict rules and guidlines that the teams must follow when it comes to the engines.
