Any would be too many. Proper precautions and schooling cut down on the risk involved. yes there are many deaths in Motocross. There are at least 10 times more deaths in car accidents than there are in motocross related accidents.

In a report published in 2006 by the US gov CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) from 2001-2004 that 23,000 people were treated across the US for injuries sustained on dirt bikes (racing or trail riding). Of those injuries, 245 resulted in death.

yes i can be very deadly but the most people have problems on jumps. I very nearly broke my neck on a jump and a friend died from his suspension snaping from a jump he clearly could not do. If your not confident on a jump, do not attempt it! But if you live in England i suggest you train with Dave thorpe 3 times world champion he will boost your confidence very quickley as i have been training with him for a year every 2 weeks. Hope this helps.

No way of knowing this, several amateur racing deaths over the years are not kept up with. Why all of this obsession with deaths and dirt bikes?
