Track events all take place on a running track around the field. They include the 100 metres, hurdles and relay races.

Field events all take place on the field within the track, they include throwing sports such as the javlin and jumping sports such as the high jump.

a track event is usually consists of a certain distance ie. 100m, 400m, 1600m and so on. a field event is one that is not distance but is still a part of a track meet ie. long jump, high jump, discus throw, shotput. the difference is one is run around the track. the other is usually not on the actually track so its considered "on the field"

Track events are all of the running events. Field events are the ones on the field such as shot put, discus, pole vault and jumps.
