this is a question that depends on your skill level. since you're asking you are probably a beginner. drivers will give you the most distance but they are not so accurate in the hands of a newcomer. so, for novices a 3,4 or 5 wood will be a better choice for starting out. they tend to produce a more accurate shot with more loft which will allow for an easier bounce and roll after landing. the length of the hole should also be a factor as well as the surrounding environment such as trees, roughs, bunkers, and waterhazards. use the club with which you can most accurately get farthest down the fairway. once you are able to hit decently with most of your clubs here are suggestions for clubs with yardage given. an average, casual golfer hits between 175-275 yrds if the tee with a driver. around 150-200 with a wood(on the fairway). around 175-20yards with the irons/wedges from the fairway( that is going down from 2-LW in irons/wedges. you will find your distances once you get a good feel for the game. good luck.

On the first shot of the hole you rest the ball on a tee because it makes the balls easier to hit especially with a driver.
