Considering that only about 500K people have ever run the Boston Marathon in over 115 years, the answer is not very many. If we're looking at just the US population, then that would be less than 0.2% of all Americans will run in the Boston Marathon. If we're looking at worldwide population, then it would be less than 0.0001% of the world will run in the Boston Marathon.
Yes, you must be Speedy Gonzales so complete such a run in that time ;) keep up the good work and get back to us if you finish in a shorter time! WE CAN MAKE YOU FAMOUS! X

The Boston Marathon. It was first run in 1897.
John J. McDermott was the winner of the first annual Boston Marathon in 1897. It was the first marathon of its kind in the US.
Yesterday, in the 2011 LA marathon, 27000 of us participated but of that 27000, 18914 finished -- Which is about 71% (it was under extreme conditions though, which may have caused more people than usual to drop out (all-day torrential rain, and 20mph winds = the shivers)
This depends on if you are really walking the entire way or throwing in occasional running. If you run a little, figure anywhere between 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours for a beginner. If you walk exclusively, expect 6 - 8 hours for a beginner. Note that you'd want to check the cut off times for races in big cities because they will usually open up the course for traffic in the 6 - 7 hour time frame. More experienced walkers can finish a marathon in the 5 1/2 to 6 hour range. Anything faster than 5 1/2 hours would be considered competitive race walking speeds and is actually harder to maintain physically than running.
Yes. Milwaukee's Lakefront Marathon, held each October, is regarded as one of the best US races to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
