When buying a new set or irons or golf clubs, it is always best to be custom fit. You will usually be given a selection of irons which have been specially selected for your age, gender and ability. You can usually get this done at any decent golf shop, and even some pro shops. You can also get it done over the internet but you have to do the measurements yourself, and you can't try out the clubs, which is a major disadvantage. They will measure the distance from your middle finger to the floor, as well as from your wrist to the floor, to determine the length of the golf club. A great tool when getting custom fit is a launch monitor, which will show you how far you carried the ball, as well as total distance. It can also show you launch angle and spin generated, too much spin may rob you of distance. You will want to pick the most consistent flight pattern. They will also place impact tape on the face of the club to measure the dispersion of the shots around the sweet spot. As well as some tape on the sole of the club, this is to see if the clubs need a lie adjustment. If you strike the ball toe down, you will need flattened clubs, and if you strike the ball heel down, you will need them bent upright, by a set amount of degrees as determined by the markings on the tape. As well as lie adjustments you can get loft adjustments, if you hit the ball especially high you can get them 1-2degrees strong so you don't hit them as high and they will go a bit farther, also if you hit them to low you can get the 1-2degrees weak, to help you get the ball in the air, but they won't go as far. You will also be offered a number of shafts, all of which will have different properties, and you can choose which one you like the most, or which gives you the best feel and most consistent flight. You will also be able to try the different stiffnesses of the shafts such as Regular, Stiff and X Stiff. There are also shafts designed for Lady and Senior golfers. You may be offered a selection of grips to chose which one you like the feel of, but golf clubs come from the manufacturer with a grip that has been specifically chosen for that particular golf club, so you may not want to change. You will also have your hand measured to see if you need a thicker grip, however an extra layer of grip tape may suffice. It is debatable whether a young golfer should get custom fit, as they will grow out of the club quickly, but it is definitely a huge advantage for a fully grown golfer.
