There are many tactics in tennis such as pushing, baselining, volleying(serve-and-volley), and variations of these. Pushing is hardly a tactic, but more so for beginners. It's when you don't go for winners or any shots with meaning, but simply get the ball back into the court the majority of the time and waiting until the other player makes an error. Baselining is when you open up the court with deep fast-paced penetrating groundstrokes that can result in winners hit with very little shots. Base-liners are generally not comfortable at the net. The serve-and-volley is not used a lot anymore because the game is now played on slower courts. I would recommend trying this is you are just starting or is you are on a quick-playing court. Roger Federer is a good example on a serve and volleyer. If you do choose to push then be prepared to lose if you are playing against a high-skilled confident player. Something you can try is to hit a drop shot to get the opposing player at the net and then to hit a lob to make the opponent retreat and hit a defensive shot where yo can then switch to offense and attack at the net.
