A 'chip shot' is a small shot usually played if the ball has landed on the fringe of the green. On most occasions, they are used to get the ball closer to the hole from the fringe or rough surrounding the green. Depending on the situation, golfers may choose to hit a chip shot high or low.

Chipping in Golf is when you are near the green, but not on it yet. You need to use a lofted wedge to get the ball close to the pin. Chipping usually does not involve a full on swing. It's a short shot.

A chip shot in a shot that goes very high, but a relatively short distance. It is sometimes referred to as a lob shot. If a player on the attack and the keeper is off his line they will try to chip them, where it goes high enough so the keeper can't get it, but down in time so it goes in.
