Russia and Romania have gymnasts who are also classically trained in dance, so they have the grace and flexibility element to them. Both countries also have gymnasts who are strong on the uneven bars, a place where the US lacks.

China has small, agile girls who have been training extensively to compete, and their small body weight is helpful when it comes to swinging and tossing themselves everywhere.

The US has had power-house types of gymnasts, such as Jordan Wieber, Shawn Johnson, and Mary Lou Retton. Their drive to be the best that they can seperates them, and their refusal to give up. They are powerful and able to accomplish big skills, and therefore have high starting values, but can also carry through on them and accomplish them with elegance.
