As early as 2005 the PGA had banned drivers which had a 460cc+ head or had a COR of greater than .83, this was to limit the distance the tour players were getting. By 2010 u-grooves will be illegal as they believe a lot of skill has been taken out of the game by these grooves which stop the ball easier on greens, even from thick rough. If you are referring to the USGA and R and A, Golf's governing bodies then the driver rules as above came into effect on 1st January 2008 and the groove rule still isn't finalised but looks to be as far away as 2024!

Can a player in a stableford borrow a putter?

PGA rules do not allow borrowing equipment during the match. Each player is entitled to 14 clubs in his bag. If he borrows it before the match starts and returns it at the end of the round, it is permissible. Players may share clubs, as long as the total between the two of them does not exceed 14 clubs. Many examples are available in section 4 of the PGA rule book.

How many different clubs do golf player use?

The clubs that the majority of PGA Tour players use are the same you can buy in any golf shop. The difference is they may have a custom shaft put in them and the clubs will be bent to their exact specifications. Some players may have custom built clubs such as putters and wedges which would obviously be quite expensive. Some players may also use prototype clubs which are made to try out a new design, and would not be available to the public yet. The tour players wouldn't have to buy the clubs, they would simply be given them.
