  • The 16 feet (on average) of wood that you walk or slide along while delivering the ball is called the approach. It's usually made from pine, sanded smooth to prevent anyone from tripping.
  • The dark line separating the approach and the lane is called the foul line; if any part of the body crosses it, or touches the lane past it, the ball is dead and worth zero pins.
  • The first 15 feet or so (up to the arrows) is called the heads; it used to be made from hard maple to take the repeated pounding of the Bowling balls.
  • The next 30 feet is called the midlane; it was also traditionally made from pine, which was a softer wood that allowed the ball to hook better.
  • The last 15 feet before the pins is called the back end; it's usually the driest part of the lane, where the bowling ball really takes off.
  • The shallow ditches running the length of the lane are called the left and right gutter or channel. If the ball lands in the gutter, it's a dead ball, even if it pops right back out again. (This is exactly the same as when a ball bounces foul, then back into fair territory again, in Baseball.)
  • The area where the pins stand is called the pin deck (or just the deck). Like the heads, it used to be made from a hard wood to stand up to all the punishment it took.
  • The area behind the lane is called the carpet or the pit. The expression 'ten in the pit' refers to a strike so powerful and perfect, that none of the pins are left lying on the deck.

A series of strikes in bowling is called an x-bagger; for example, four strikes in a row is a four-bagger.

In addition, two strikes in a row is called a 'double', while three is called a 'triple' or a 'turkey'. Six in a row has long been called a 'six-pack'; while strings of four and five have recently acquired the nicknames 'hambone' and 'yahtzee' respectively.
