If you go to the website of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), formerly the American Bowling Congerss (ABC), they have the rules online or downloadable in pdf format. These are updated regularly. There is also a telephone number that you can call if there is a specific question you have that you cannot find the answer to in the rules book.

As with all organized sports, there are a surprisingly large number of them. However, the basics for tenpin bowling are as follows:

  • You get two tries to knock down all the pins, or as many as you can.
  • Each game consists of ten turns per bowler, called frames.
  • The ball must weigh between 6 and 16 lbs., and must be exactly 27" around. (There are also restrictions on the number and placement of the holes.)
  • If you knock down all the pins on the first ball (a strike) your frame is over.
  • However, in the tenth and final frame of the game, getting a strike or a spare permits you to throw a total of three balls.
  • You get a bonus to your score for throwing a strike or a spare.
  • If the ball bounces out of the gutter (one of the side channels), or if you cross the foul line, you get a zero for that ball. If it was the first ball of your frame, then you reset the pins and try for a spare.
  • If you bowl out of turn, your score doesn't count.

If you really want to boggle your mind, below is a link to a site that contains the USBC Rulebook. Have fun.

Here is an example of one rule of ten pin bowling.

A foul occurs when a part of the player's body encroaches on or goes beyond the foul line and touches any part of the lane, equipment or building during or after a delivery. A ball is in play after a delivery until the same or another player is on the approach in position to make a succeeding delivery.

The object is to knock down as many pins as possible, the object is to get a strike, meaning knocking down all of the pins, If you don't knock them down on the first try, then you have the chance to pick up the spares, the person with the most points at the end wins.
