It was a reaction to the American No Fun League, also known as the Puritan Church. When bowling came to this continent, it was played as Ninepins - the way bowling is still played in Europe. The Puritans felt bowling, like any other recreational activity, took time away from prayer...so they passed a law in Massachusetts that No Person shall Bowl at Nine Pins. Naturally, the bowling alley proprietors realized bowling at other numbers of pins was still legal and added a tenth pin to the rack.

The ABC stood for the American Bowling Congress, which existed from 1895 until 2005. It was the sanctioning body for men's bowling, and the companion to the WIBC (Women's International Bowling Congress). In 2005, the separate men's, women's and youth divisions were reorganized and merged into the USBC, the United States Bowling Congress. But older awards, and bowling equipment, might still say "ABC (or ABC/WIBC) Certified."

There is a womens bowling association. In fact, just last monday they had their championship bowling tournament. There used to be an Association called WIBC (Women's International Bowling Congree). However it has been joined with ABC (American Bowling Congree), PBA (Professional Bowler's Assiation), and YABA (Young American Bowling Alliance) to form USBC (United States Bowling Congress). While they still do have "female only" sponsored events, it is sanctioned under the USBC banner.
