Some players play a year on the Nationwide tour in an attempt to finish in the top 25 and win a PGA Tour card.
Phil Mickelson did not go to Q school due to the fact that he won the Northern Telecom Open, a PGA tour event, as an amateur in 1991. He was able to turn pro the next year.

National Insurance sponsored the championship, which was renamed as Nationwide Tours in 2003, it was originally called Web.com tours. The Web.com tours is the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA tour, and features professional golfers who have either failed to score well enough at that level's qualifying school (the main tours qualifying tournament, popularly referred as Q-school) to earn their PGA tour card.
You have to start by going to your regional qualifier. If you top the competition there then you continue on to q-school. This year and almost every year it is in Florida. Be prepared to spend a lot of money to possibly get your *** planted firmly into the ground. But who knows. Details can be found here------> http://www.pgatour.com/qschool/
If you are referring to tour money lists, those people who finish 126 or worse lose their full tour card and need to go to Q school to get it back. But, depending how they finish on the money list they will receive some exemptions.
