If there were no friction the player would not be able to grip onto the court, they would also not be able to get any spin on the ball they would still however manage to hit it.

Oh yes, in many ways. Just as one example, tennis balls are "fuzzy". The purpose of the fuzz is to slow the ball down somewhat by creating more air resistance - friction.
