Because you are usually swinging form inside the line to outside the line as you contact the ball which puts a right to left spin.

If it goes straight left then you are probably aiming left and need to line your club, shoulders and feet parallel. Check this by putting a stick on the ground at the point of your toes and see where you are aiming.

The Golf ball is used because that is what was chosen when the game was developing.

Golf originated in Scotland. Shepherds would take a stone or pebble & hit it with their crook aiming for a certain point.Over time rules were introduced & so golf became more advanced. The early golf balls were made of leather stuffed with feathers. The ball was just a natural progression & also it was easier to control, when it was hit

First off the club face has to close at impact. If the club face is open (aiming right) you will never hook or draw the ball. Second, you want to have an inside-out swing path, meaning you approach the inside of the ball on the downswing and follow through the outside. If you combine this swing path with the closing of the face, you should hit a draw/hook.

You hit a golf ball as it is the only way you can play under the rules. It's a sport, and millions of people enjoy it.
