That is a very good question. Gymnastics can hurt your back, wrist, or neck, but it is good exercise. I take gymnastics and have never severely hurt myself. If you know what you are doing it should be fine. If you don't know how to do a kart-wheel not so much. If you classify yourself as an amature you should start in a lower class before doing anything that could hurt you. Let the instructer teach you before you try something you are not sure you can do. After you are confident and are sure you can do a trick, then you should be able to do anything in the world.

Yes, over time gymnastics tumbling is hard on your joints and spine. If you're careful and rest when you get an injury the damage is much less. It is also typical for a gymnast to have at least one gymnastics related injury (such breaking bones from falling or tumbling wrong, or muscle tears from hyper-extension) in their career.
