1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
The 28 African countries boycotted the 1976 Summer Games due to the inclusion of New Zealand in the Games after New Zealand played South Africa in rugby. South Africa had been banned from the Olympics since 1964 due to its apartheid policy and the African countries believed that New Zealand should also be banned for continuing to play South Africa in international sport. When the IOC refused to ban New Zealand, the African countries boycotted.

South Africa was allowed to compete in the 1960 Games but it was their last Olympics until 1992. The International Olympic Committee banned them for their refusal to comdemn apartheid. The IOC withdrew South Africa's invitation to the 1964 Summer Games during the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. The IOC said the only way they would be allowed to compete would be to publicly renounce the practice of racial discrimination in the country and to allow competition between whites and blacks. When the IOC's ultimatum was not met, South Africa's invitation to the 1964 games was officially withdrawn.
On 17 July 1976, at the opening ceremony of the Montreal Olympics, 25 African countries withdrew their teams. The boycott was due to long-standing tensions over South Africa's refusal to condemn the policy of apartheid. South Africa had been banned from the Olympics since 1964, but the boycotting countries protested at New Zealand's continued sporting links with South Africa. The International Olympic Committee refused to ban New Zealand, whose rugby team was touring South Africa at the time, so the boycotting nations took it upon themselves to make a stand.
