In the later 1980s and early 1990s, Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev instituted a number of democratic reforms. The Communist hard-liners didn't like this very much and they eventually decided to seize control of the government. The coup failed, however, and Gorbachev returned to power. On August 29, 1991, the Supreme Soviet voted to outlaw the Communist Party due to its involvement in the coup. Four months later, the entire country collapsed and the Russian Federation emerged from the ashes of the Soviet Union.
