Most novice runners max out at 20 miles because to run any further would leave them too tired to continue training for and running in the marathon. Having run 3 marathons and trained many others to do their first, I strongly recommend that the longest training run take no longer than 3 hours and 25 minutes and take place three weeks before the race. This should leave you in condition to continue your training and adequately recover before the race.

Marathon 490 BCE.
A messenger by the name of Pheidippides, although there is some contention as to whether this actually happened. Pheidippides WAS sent with a request for aid from Marathon to Sparta, which was a distance of 240 km (which only took him two days). The story relates that he traveled back to the battle was was then sent to Athens with news of victory. Then, after running only 40km, he collapsed dead after announcing the victory.
Yes, they won. But they only won because they had Sparta's army help them.
We can only guess. It was able to produce 1,000 wariors to support the Athenians at the battle of Marathon. Using that as a multiplier, perhaps about 6,000.
There were only a few programs to help the unemployed.
There are many marathon training plans available online. Many are aimed at beginners who have little or no experience with running. Almost with no exception these plans focus on easy running only and get you to run 20 miles once or twice during the training cycle. This generally leaves you under-prepared for the marathon. A good marathon training plan combines easy running with faster running (tempo running and intervals). It also contains test runs / training races that give you a good sense of what you are capable of on race day. One of the best marathon training programs available today is 100 Day Marathon Plan by Marius Bakken. The approach is modern and fresh. In addition to several different marathon running programs sorted by finish time his program also contains videos, written information and the ability to ask questions. An older good marathon training program is Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger and Douglas. Their marathon plans are sorted based on the number of miles you want to do and is accompanied by an enormous amount of useful information.
26 miles was the distance the Greek runner covered, while running, to declare "Nike" after the last major sea battle during the Peloponnesian Wars. The Greeks begun honoring this distance as a 'marathon' distance.
There is a really great place called gotrain.com. They have job training programs that are only one year or less.

Anyone who can walk can run a marathon, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone below 8 years of age, and then only if that individual is extremely fit and has been on runs of over 15 miles in length and not been overly fatigued. The younger you are, the more dangerous a marathon is, and marathons hurt! Only runners who can handle this type of pain should run a marathon.
Marathon is a word known worldwide through its link to the race (26 miles and 385 yards) in the Olympic Games. Many also know that its origin honors the Greek runner who raced to Athens to announce to the anxious Athenians that they had defeated the Persians at Marathon. He had strength only to deliver the message before he collapsed and died.
How would a person illegally run a marathon? Assuming he did not get money for doing so, why worry about it? To qualify for the Boston Marathon, you have to qualify in a marathon that is sanctioned by the Boston Marathon Association. Once you have qualified, you may enter the Boston Marathon. It is the only one that requires a qualifying time in order to enter. Many runners train hard to make the qualification time and are frustrated if someone jumps in the course and runs it illegally. There is no money involved, just hard, honest training.
Legend has it that Pheidippides, a soldier in the Greek military, ran from Marathon to Athens with the news that the Greek military had defeated the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. Supposedly Pheidippides collapsed and died after giving the news. No documentation has been discovered concerning this and it is really not known whether this actually happened or whether it is true legend/folklore. The distance between Marathon and Athens was around 40 km.
Dental assistant programs are generally very expensive. They start at about $5,000 and only go up from there. Thankfully there are many programs out there to help you pay for it.
