There were several reasons. Trostsky was a late convert to Bolshevism and was not trusted by many of the old Bolsheviks. many old Bolsheviks considered Trotsky to be too much of an intellectual for their liking. Many disliked him for being Jewish despite the fact that many Bolsheviks were themselves Jewish. Grigori Zinoviev, himself a Jew, hated Trotsky so much he joined with Stalin and Lev Kamenev (also Jewish) to form a three party ruling block to oust Trotsky from power. Another reason is that Stalin, as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party as well as Commissar of other departments in government held the loyalty of many people he had installed in government and party positions. Trotsky had few allies in power.

Who is the Russian person Leon Trotsky?

Leon/Lev Trotsky was originally known as Lev Bronstein and was a hard line leftist leader. He was born to a middle class Jewish family in russia and was involved in anti tsarist activities due maily to the pogroms against the Jews. He started out as a menshevik before joining the bolshevik faction of the communists. The bolshevik faction, name derives from majority as Lenin claimed he had the support of the majority of the communists, also included Stalin, Bukharin, Zinoviev and Kamenev who all fought with each other and Trotsky for the leadership of the early USSR after Lenin's death. Trotsky had much military prestige from the Russian Civil war but was the first to lose out in the leadership contest and was exiled. He travelled to many places, initially Turkey before he settled in Mexico and had an affair with Freida Khalo. Eventually years after Stalin had come out on top of the leadership contest his agent, an NKVD agent, put an ice pick that a day later killed him.
