Stalin also allied himself with Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kaminev to run the government while Lenin was incapacitated as well as after his death. Stalin thus had virtually all of the important people in the Communist Party on his side and against Trotsky, so he was easily able to get a vote to expel Trotsky from the Communist Party and then exile him from the country.
