Through the 2008 Games in Beijing, the most medals won in an Olympics is 8 and was done by gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin of the USSR at the 1980 Games in Moscow (3 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze) and swimmer Michael Phelps of the USA at the 2004 Games in Athens (6 gold, 2 bronze) and the 2008 Games in Beijing (8 gold).
