Ernie Davis of Syracuse University was the first African American to be selected #1 overall in the NFL draft. That was 1962 and he was selected by the Washington Redskins and subsequently traded to the Cleveland Browns. Davis tragically was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 1962 and passed away in May, 1963 without ever playing an NFL game. Davis was also the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.
