The February Revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the Tsar was a spontaneous demonstration against the Tsar by peasants, workers and soldiers in Petrograd. They were demonstrating against food shortages, unfair land ownership and Russia's involvement in World War 1. The demonstrations got out of hand, spread to other cities and could not be put down by the Tsar. He was convinced by his ministers that the only way to stop the rioting was to step down, so he did.
