This question has been up for debate since the first baseball game ever. The answer is that nobody can be classified as the greatest ever, as there are so many aspects that make all of these players great. Think about it. Think of all of the great things a player can do on the diamond. Some of the greatest playwers have been great basestealers, home run hitters, pitcers, defensive stars, clutch players, durable players, conmsistent ghitters...etc. The list goes on and on.
My vote for best all around player? Babe Ruth. Sure he was fat and slow, but you can't deny the guy could hit. 714 home runs, 2174 runs scored, 2213 RBI's, 2873 hits, 123 stolen bases, and .342 average. All that in 22 years. And add that to the years he spent as a pitcher. Contrary to belief, The Babe wasnt a half bad pitcher. Look at the stats: 94-46 W-L, 2.28 ERA, 488 K's, and a .671 win percentage.
Of course, there are the other greats of ther game who excel Ruth in one or more aspects. My choice for the best pitcher would be Sandy Koufax. The guy only pitched for a bout nine years, but in those nine, he did some pretty amazing things. If he hadnt caught athritis and been forced to retire, who knows what he would have accomplished.
As for best defensive fielder, there was no one better than the Wizard of Oz. I'm talking about Ozzie Smith, the old shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. This guy could do it all, turning more double plays than anybody in the game.
Best baserunner? Ricky Henderson, The Man of Steal. This guy stole 100 bases three times, and holds the season record for most, with 130. He's also got the all time record for stolen bases, with 1406.
I think the best consistent hitter would have to be Ty Cobb. Cobb was a human dynamo. he had the second most hits of all time, with 4189. But that's only the beginnning. Cobb scored 2246 runs, knocked in 1937 runs, and had a strangle hold on the batting crown, which he took twelve times in all, including an unbelievable nine times in a row. In his fantastic 24 years as a player, Cobb hit under .300 only once, and topped .400 twice.
Babe Ruth is what some people thin but to be honest it is Hank Aaron because he beat Babe ruth`s record.
Babe Ruth, on the New York Yankees.
Josh Gibson. African American in 1930's-1940's. If you don't believe me, look him up.
he was the greatest basketball player who ever lived
