The first African American elected to the Hall of Fame that played his entire career in the American League was Reggie Jackson who was elected in 1993. Other African Americans who played in the American League and were elected before Jackson: 1) Satchel Paige played six seasons with the Indians, Browns, and Athletics. He was elected in 1971. Paige made the Hall more for his time in the Negro Leagues than he did for his time in the American League.

2) Frank Robinson played 10 seasons with the Orioles, Angels, and Indians. He was elected in 1982. However, he spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Reds.

3) Ferguson Jenkins played eight seasons in the American League with the Red Sox and Rangers. He was elected in 1991. However, he is best known for winning 20+ games 6 consecutive seasons while pitching for the Chicago Cubs.
