The NFL does not keep official stats (records) for most tackles for a game or season. I'm not sure why but I think it's because it's so subject to judgment. Figuring who gets a tackle and who gets the assist can be very difficult and easily argued.

-----------

The most tackles I have ever seen credited to one player in a season is Tommy Nobis, LB, Atlanta Falcons. In 1966 he unofficially recorded 294 tackles, as a rookie.

The unofficial season record, recognized by the league, is 214 tackles by Hardy Nickerson, LB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1993.

222 by Eugene Lockhart of the Dallas Cowboys back in 1989.

Game-by-game data is only available since 1999. Since then, the record is 25 tackles in a single game, achieved by Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher in 2006 versus the Arizona Cardinals. Zach Thomas, London Fletcher and Rodney Harrison are tied for second with 21 tackles and there are seven additional games where a player has achieved 20 tackles.

Monte Johnson had 20 tackles for the Raiders in the 1979 playoff game against the Baltimore Colts. Johnson broke a vertebra early in the game.

Wahoo Mcdainel had 23 tackels in 1964 for the New York Jets when they played the Denver Broncos.

Patrick Willis of the San Francisco 49ers had 226 in 2007. http://www.49ers.com/team/roster_detail.php?PRKey=126 too bad that he had 174 total tackles and only 135 solo so no ur wrong Actually, team sites record their own statistics for tackles because tackles aren't an official league statistic. The team reviews each game and records the tackles. So Patrick Willis did technically record 226.

Kicker Shayne Graham holds the record for tackles by a kicker in a single season with 11 tackles for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2005. Statistics are only available since 1994. Arizona Cardinal Neil Rackers and New York Jet John Hall are tied for second with 8 tackles in 2008 and 1998, respectively.

The statistics has only been kept since 1994, but Ray Lewis is the all-time leader with over 1400. The 2010 leader as of Week 9 is New England Patriots defensive Jerod Mayo with 96.
