The National Baseball League was founded in 1876 by a small group of business men headed by William A. Hulbert and Albert G. Spalding. The latter was also a leading baseball pitcher. The location of the meeting that formed this league was at the Grand Central Hotel in New York City.

Depends what you mean by "major league" baseball.

The first national baseball organization that attempted to set rules, create team schedules, and declare a yearly champion was the National Association of Baseball Players; which was founded in 1871. To this day, neither Major League Baseball nor the Hall of Fame consider this organization to be a "major" league; although many historians do. The National League, an organization still in existence, was founded in 1876.
