The second pick overall in the 1961 MLB Expansion Draft was catcher Hobie Landrith (to Mets from Giants). Other notable players in this draft were pitcher Roger Craig (6th overall to Mets from Dodgers), first baseman Gil Hodges (14th overall to Mets from Dodgers) and infielder Don Zimmer (43rd overall to Mets from Cubs)
The Vikings first ever draft pick was running back Tommy Mason from Tulane University.
The draft started...."The Government instituted the Nations first peacetime draft in September of 1940 and began to prepare troops for combat." got this from the web. -----------Actually, if we are referring to the United States, the first actual Draft was used by the North in the Civil War. It was highly unpopular, as it was very unfairly conducted.
The FIRST US draft was during the US Civil War (1861-1865). The LAST US draft was during the Vietnam War (1961-1975).
Ever since the First Gulf War (1990), hardly a year goes by where we aren't inundated by rumors of re-instatement of a military draft. In December 2007, the Selective Service System announce that it plans to conduct a comprehensive test of the draft system sometime in 2009. This, coupled President Bush increasing our force size in Iraq, has caused a flurry of newspaper editorials, speculating about the possibility of a draft. The draft for the Iraq mission is not needing to be put in use.
The US Civil War (1861-1865) was the US's first military draft; the Vietnam War (1961-1975) was the US's last military draft. Both the Civil War & Vietnam War had draft dodgers and draft riots. Both the Civil War and Vietnam War were un-declared wars; in both wars, the South lost the war; during both wars the US President was assassinated; during both wars a Vice President Johnson took over office.
Deacon Jones was a 14th round choice of the Los Angeles Rams in the 1961 NFL draft.

1961: 1.Walt Bellamy, College Indiana, NBA Team Chicago
That was running back Tommy Mason out of Tulane University.

Bob Lilly
The Dallas Cowboys' first-ever draft pick was TCU defensive tackle Bob Lilly in 1961. The team's latest No. 1 selection was wide receiver Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State in 2010.
The FIRST US war to have an "official" military draft was the US Civil War (1861-1865); which also resulted in the nation's FIRST "draft riots." Vietnam (1961-1975) was the LAST military draft, with the accompanying last "draft riots." US males were drafted in WW1 (1917-1918), WW2 (1941-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953).
Obama was not drafted and so, of course, he did not dodge the draft.
Bob Lilly === That is not correct. Lilly was the Cowboys' first draft pick, but that was in 1961. The 1960 team was stocked via an expansion draft. They got 32 players from other NFL teams, but it wasn't in a round-by-round draft. The Cowboys did not participate in the college draft because they were awarded the franchise after the college draft was held. So its hard to say who was the FIRST Cowboy.
