Lenin was in official exile at least twice and fled to avoid arrest once. In 1897, after organizing a pro-workers union, he served a year in prison then was exiled to Siberia for three years. He lived in Shushenskoe in the south of the Minusinsk area. Ironically, his pseudonym 'Lenin', adopted in 1903, may have come from a variation of the name of the River Lena, which runs through Siberia.
Lenin and several other socialist then lived in exile in Switzerland for a good seventeen years. He attended the Second Party Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Party in 1903, where he adopted the name Bolsheviks for his supporters in the party. In 1917, he travelled through Germany, Sweden and Finland to return to Russia in April 1917.
In July 1917, Lenin fled to Finland to avoid arrest by the Kerensky Provisional Government (PG) when a premature coup against the PG by the Bolsheviks failed and many Bolsheviks, including Leon Trotsky, were rounded up and imprisoned. He stayed with several different Bolshevik sympathizers in various places including Helsingfors (now Helsinki) and Sestoretsk.
