In 1925 the Alabama Crimson Tide, coached by Wallace Wade, won their first championship playing the Washington Huskies in the Rose Bowl. The Crimson Tide beat the previously un-defeated Huskies in a comeback win in the second half. The final score was 20-19. The team finished with a 10-0 record, and was then selected the National Champions of the College Football world by Football Annual and Helms Athletic Foundation.

The two teams were undefeated when they met in the Sugar Bowl on December 31, 1973. The game, a classic struggle between two great coaches and two great teams, was won by Notre Dame by the score of 24-23. The Associated Press named Notre Dame national champions but the United Press International, who voted for the national championship prior to the playing of bowl games, named Alabama as national champions.
